Making Smartphones a Lifeline, Not a Liability
The first generation with deeply ingrained smartphone habits is now entering older age — and entering the window of Alzheimer’s and dementia diagnosis.
This moment has created a problem that most technology was never designed to handle.
Smartphones, once a tool for connection and independence, can quickly become a major liability during dementia progression. Scam vulnerability increases. Confusion plays out publicly on social media. Conventional apps become unusable. And what was once helpful becomes a source of stress for families and caregivers.
Trusted Life Circle exists to meet this moment.
What is Trusted Life Circle?
Trusted Life Circle (TLC) is a private social app for people living with early Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and for the people who care for them.
TLC replaces conventional social media platforms — like Facebook or Instagram — with a dementia-informed social experience designed specifically for cognitive change. Rather than forcing people with dementia to adapt to overwhelming apps, TLC adapts technology to the realities of dementia care.
Our goal is simple:
Preserve meaningful connection while reducing risk.
Why Smartphones Become a Problem in Dementia
As Alzheimer’s and dementia progress, smartphones often introduce serious challenges:
• Increased vulnerability to phone and text scams
• Accidental financial exposure – (learn how to protect seniors from digital fraud)
• Public displays of confusion on social platforms
• Frustration with complex interfaces and hidden gestures
• Loss of usable connection despite constant screen time
For many families, this creates an impossible dilemma:
Remove the phone entirely — or accept the risk.
In some cases, removing the phone is a loving and protective decision. That option should always remain valid.
But in other cases — especially in the earlier stages — the phone can still be a lifeline if it’s designed differently.
Built From Firsthand Caregiving Experience
Trusted Life Circle was born from real caregiving.
Founder Andy Reiland began building TLC while caring for his mother, who was diagnosed with dementia consistent with Alzheimer’s disease in 2022. Because of her age and life stage, she entered her dementia journey with a smartphone already deeply ingrained in her daily habits.
That phone created real risks — but it also provided familiarity, independence, and a unique way to stay connected.
TLC was built to double down on what was helpful and remove what was harmful.

A Dementia-Informed Social Experience
Trusted Life Circle is not just another social app. It’s designed with a dementia-informed UX and UI, prioritizing:
• Simplicity and clarity
• Familiar visual patterns
• Reduced cognitive load
• Minimal distractions
• Predictable, calm interaction
Instead of endless feeds, ads, and algorithmic noise, TLC centers the individual with dementia inside an invite-only circle of support — made up of family, friends, and caregivers.
This “audience of one” approach ensures that content feels personal, recognizable, and grounding.
Inspired by Elephants
Trusted Life Circle takes inspiration from how elephants form protective circles around their most vulnerable herd members.
TLC’s social network architecture centers an individual with dementia within a private, protective circle of support.
Not only does this create a safe environment for an individual experiencing memory impairment, but it makes the often-amorphous caregiving community around a person with dementia more tangible, visible, and connected.
Creative Care Technology for Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Trusted Life Circle is at the forefront of what we call Creative Care Technology.
We are exploring a new frontier of dementia care technology — one that blends thoughtful design, emotional intelligence, and real-world caregiving insight.
Rather than building tools around dementia, we are building tools that work with it.
This approach supports:
• Quality of life
• Familiar routines
• Meaningful moments
• Shared connection for caregivers and loved ones
